- 1. SouthWestern Bell has checked our lines and declared them acceptable.
- The technician did tell me that they weren't great, but within the
- accepted tolerances. He mentioned off the record that we were located in
- an area with bad lines and that there wasn't anything we could do about
- it.
-
- 2. Some modems seem more susceptible to connection problems with our
- BBS than others. We have Zoom 28.8 modems on our BBS. Having personally
- spent more than 100 hours configuring the BBS and modems with the
- assistance of Zoom and Galacticom (the BBS developer), I'm totally
- satisfied that it's correctly setup. It wasn't when the BBS was first
- setup---there were config problems---but it's fine now.
-
- 3. I have =no= problems connecting to the BBS with my Practical
- Peripherals 28.8 on another of the same lousy phone lines to the BBS
- at speeds greater than 14.4. I have =no= problems connecting to the
- BBS with my Zoom 14.4 from home (on a good phone line) at 14.4. I
- have =lots= of problems connecting with another Zoom 14.4 at work
- on another lousy line. Therefore, I suspect that certain modems can
- handle the line noise problems than others. Knowing how much better
- the Practical Periphals modem seems to handle them than the Zoom, I
- wish we hadn't bought Zoom 28.8 modems for the BBS now. But they're
- bought and they work well for 98 percent of our calls. Over 250 people
- have downloaded the 3.0i patch files from our BBS in the last few
- days and I've only had 3 reports from users with connection problems.
-
- Sorry, we're relatively satisfied with the BBS's functioning. It's a
- free service we provide to our customers. You don't have to use it.
- Nobody is forcing you to call it. If you don't like it or have problems
- with it, wait for the patches to appear on Aminet. Kevin uploaded them
- there right after they were put on the BBS.

- Our BBS has two lines. It is unusual for both lines to be in use
- simultaneously unless we have released a new patch. It was in use
- almost constantly for two days, but the call volume has started to
- die down again.
